Different Types of Dental Crowns You Can Consider

Dental crowns, also referred to as dental caps, are prosthetics that are cemented directly onto a damaged tooth. The main function of dental crowns is to camouflage any damage that has been acquired by the tooth such as chip or a fracture. However, they can also be used to strengthen teeth and correct any misalignments, hence improving the aesthetics of your smile.

Dental crowns are custom made for patients. If your dentist requires you to have one, they will start by reshaping your tooth so as to ensure the dental crown will fit snugly atop the tooth. Once this is done, they will take an impression of your teeth. This enables them to create a dental crown that is perfectly suited to your individual teeth's dimensions. Before your dental crown is ready, you will be required to wear a temporary crown that will prevent any further damage to the tooth. There are different types of materials that you can choose for your dental crown.

Ceramic dental crowns

These are best suited for the restoration of damaged teeth that are located at the front of your mouth. This is because the ceramic colour makes it easier for the crown to blend with your adjacent natural teeth.

Metal dental crowns

These dental crowns are manufactured from an array of alloys. Since they are metal based, they provide more structural strength as when compared to other crowns. Additionally, they do not require much maintenance, which means they also have a longer lifespan than other dental crown options. It should be noted though that some people might be wary of getting metal dental crowns due to the stark colour difference when compared to their natural teeth. As such, these are best suited to cover damage in back teeth, which would not be easily visible. Alternatively, if you would like a metal crown and you have damage on one of your front teeth, you could opt for porcelain that has been fused to a metal. This tends to be more expensive though due to the use of two different types of material to create the crown. Some of the metal dental crowns you could opt for include:

  • Gold alloy dental crowns: These dental crowns consist of gold and copper. They are one of the strongest metal dental crowns that you could opt for.
  • Base metal dental crowns: These dental crowns consist of non-noble metals such as silver or platinum. Being non noble metals makes them resistant to oxidation, therefore you can rest assured that your dental crowns will not succumb to corrosion.
