Invisalign Braces: Do You Need to Change What You Drink?

While you take your Invisalign braces out when you eat, you need to keep them in for most of the time, and you may not want to remove your braces every time you need a drink. However, like food, the things you drink can affect your braces, so you may need to take care when you're thirsty. What do you need to know about drinking with Invisalign trays?

Water Is a Safe Option

If you're thirsty and you're wearing Invisalign braces, then you're safe to drink plain cold water. Water doesn't affect your braces, and you won't need to take them out to have a drink. Sparkling water is also usually fine. You shouldn't, however, drink flavoured waters. They may contain sugars that can cause plaque to build up on your brace shields. This may make your braces look discoloured and may make them harder to clean.

Avoid Coloured Drinks

Coloured drinks will stain your Invisalign brace trays. At best, this will make them look a little off-colour; at worst, this could give you a very discoloured smile very quickly. So, it's best not to drink red wine, beer, fruit juices, squashes or sodas with your braces in. Be aware that some drinks that don't look coloured, like clear sodas or even white wine, may contain enough colouring to turn your brace trays from clear to slightly yellow.

Avoid Very Hot Drinks

As well as staining your braces, hot drinks like tea and coffee may also damage your brace trays. For example, a piping-hot cuppa may warp the tray's plastic. This affects the way the braces fit on your teeth, making them less effective. In extreme cases, you may need to go back to your dentist to get new trays earlier than scheduled.

To be on the safe side, it's a good idea to stick to just drinking water whenever you are wearing your Invisalign braces. If you want to drink coloured, sugary or hot drinks, then try to do this at times when you've already removed your braces at meal times. If you are desperate for a coffee during the day or a wine when you're out with mates in the evening, then it may be better to take your trays out until you're done.

Tip: Rinse your mouth out after having coloured drinks to get rid of any residue before you put your trays back in. If you still have some liquid on your teeth, this may stain your braces.
