Same-Day Dental Implants: Are You A Good Candidate?

With traditional dental implants, the placement process is multi-step and usually spans over a couple of months. With same-day dental implants, however, you get everything done on the same day.

Same-day dental implants allow you to get your tooth restoration immediately without having to wait. As with any treatment, dental or otherwise, you will first need to establish whether or not you are a good candidate for same-day dental implants.

Among the key things that your dentist will look at in the initial evaluation are the following.

1. Bone Tissue Depth and Density

Without enough bone for the dental implants to fuse to, the risk of early failure is quite high. If you have low jawbone density, then your dentist may advise against getting the implants for now. There is, however, a workaround through which the dentist may do some bone grafting in order to add a bit of density and depth to your jawbone.

2. Bone Tissue Health

An infected jawbone could be the very thing that disqualifies you for same-day dental implants. The fusion of the implant and the healing process after that may be more difficult with diseased bone tissue. This is because the infection will more than likely develop around the implant.

Your dentist will first treat the infection with antibiotics and any other necessary treatment course. After that, you can always go back for a second evaluation, and if your bone tissue is in good health, you may get your same-day dental implants.

3. Other Medical Issues

Some bone diseases may disqualify you for implants. These would make implant fusion quite difficult, especially with immediate loading.

Similarly, if you suffer from any medical condition that makes healing a little more difficult than normal, then you may want to consider other options. A blood clotting disorder, for example, can be a risk factor.

4. Force on the Tooth

How much force is the tooth that you want to replace subjected to every time you bite down? Do you grind your teeth? In the latter case, if you grind your teeth excessively, then you will subject the implants to too great a lateral force too soon, leading to premature failure.

As outlined, getting same-day dental implants is not about personal preference. They are not for everyone, and that is why your dentist will always start with an assessment to establish whether or not you are an ideal candidate. For more information, speak to your dentist.
